Maine Coon to kot półdługowłosy średniego typu orientalnego. Średni ciężar dorosłego samca to 6 do 9 kilogramów, a samicy 3 do 5 kilogramów. Ciężar kotów Maine Coon sięga jednak często 11 kilogramów i więcej, a ich długość 1 metra. Okrywa włosowa składa się z dwóch warstw - podszerstka i włosów okrywowych. Ze względu na swoją budowę jest wodoodporna. Futro jest bardzo obfite na brzuchu i pośladkach, a na szyi układa się w charakterystyczną kryzę. U kotów tych dopuszczalne są wszystkie rodzaje umaszczenia, jednak najbardziej rozpowszechnione jest brązowe umaszczenie typu tabby.

W wyniku sterowanej selekcji stały się rasą nie tylko piękną, lecz przede wszystkim pożądaną z tego względu, że jej przedstawiciele przywiązują się do człowieka i – w porównaniu z innymi rasami kotów i innymi gatunkami zwierząt domowych – są bardziej towarzyskie i łatwiejsze we współżyciu.

Przodkowie rasy zostali sprowadzeni z Europy do Ameryki Północnej przez pierwszych osadników w XVI i XVII wieku. Europejskie koty przystosowały się do surowych zim w Nowej Anglii i poprzez naturalną selekcję rozwinęła się rasa dużych, dobrze zbudowanych kotów z grubym, wodoodpornym futrem. O powstaniu rasy opowiadają także liczne legendy. Według jednej z nich, przodkami Maine Coon była dzika kotka ze stanu Maine i szop, co miałoby tłumaczyć charakterystyczny wygląd kotów - puszysty ogon i najbardziej popularne umaszczenie.
